Yoga is an system of observances, techniques, and practices that promote a healthy body, a calm and composed mind, and create a foundation for higher awareness.
“Yoga” is a Sanskrit word that translates as “union”. Closer to the surface, this union manifests as a joining of body and mind, a balance of the physical and subtle energies that we are made of. At the deepest level, Yoga can be interpreted as a “yoking” of the individual consciousness with the universal consciousness, a bonding of Self and the Divine.
Although Yoga is traditionally a spiritual practice, it is commonly pursued for its physical and psychological benefits, which include: increasing flexibility, strength, and mobility; improving circulation, respiration and digestion; enhancing posture, balance and endurance; stimulating vital glands and organs, and relieving fatigue, tension, and emotional stress.
Hatha is a combination of two Sanskrit words, "Sun and Moon" describing a balance of two opposite yet interdependent energies. When we pursue this balance in our Yoga asanas, not only do we avoid injury, but we are able to hold them longer, explore and breathe into them, and lay a foundation for expanded awareness.
Yin Yoga focuses on the "tha" aspects of the practice. By sinking and releasing into postures for longer durations we are able to target the deep connective tissue (ligaments, tendons, myofascia) that binds the body together and influences the subtle energy that allow communication and harmony between the body and mind.
Vinyasa is a Sanskrit word that translates as "to place in a special way". It refers to conscious, deliberate movement. Vinyasa is a more active asana practice where we focus on coordinating body, breath, and mind through a series of movements that flow from one into the next.
