Based in Nevis, a small island in the Eastern Caribbean, Amanda works as a freelance Yoga/Meditation teacher, Scuba Instructor, Thai Yoga Massage Practitioner, Retreat Host, Adventure Guide, and Artist. You can typically find her at Pinneys Beach, next to Sunshine's Beach Bar, sharing her offerings and selling Beach Bling, her unique brand of island-style jewelry and calabash (tropical gourd) art. During the low season (July-Oct), Amanda can often be found sharing Yoga and selling her creative work at festivals and seasonal markets while visiting family in the Midwest, USA.
Following a difficult adolescence riddled with anxiety and psychosomatic illnesses, my favorite Beatles song led me to stumble upon Yoga at the age of 19 while living in New York City. I instantly felt a profound connection to the philosophies at the heart of Yoga and as a result of the transformation I experienced, felt passionately driven to share the practice with others. In 2005 I attended a residential training at Satchidananda Ashram in VA, USA, and became certified to teach Integral® Yoga, a spiritually-based school of Yoga founded by the renowned Swami Satchidananda, rooted in the Sivananda lineage.
Unmotivated by conventional education and career paths, I spent the majority of my 20's and 30's wanderlusting my way around the globe, working seasonal hospitality and scuba diving jobs, all while continuing to study and share Yoga, especially inspired by the perspectives adopted during my time spent in India, Nepal, and Southeast Asia.
In 2014 I found myself on the Caribbean island federation of St. Kitts & Nevis for a Scuba Diving job. After meeting my (now) husband, a Kittian islander, I surrendered to a different, more rooted kind of adventure. Being somewhat settled has not only allowed me to share Yoga more consistently, and grow as a teacher, but has also catalyzed a shift from a lifestyle of compulsive movement to a fascinating journey into the challenging complexities of stillness.
Since 2019 I have developed a preference towards Yin Yoga, an approach that targets the energetic system through a fusion of classical yoga, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Taoist concepts. Blended with my traditional Hatha Yoga background and training in Thai Massage and Myofascial Release, an intuitive, therapeutic practice rooted in self-inquiry and self-healing has been forged.
Rather than get caught up in the ever-changing labels and trends of the commercial Yoga world, I have learned that there is a powerful depth in simplicity, which leads to my belief that, especially for the advancing Yogi, less is more.
Whether I am teaching a more active, movement-based practice, or one explored from a position of stillness, practitioners can expect a foundational and functional approach, steeped in ancient wisdom and supported by modern science.
With a foundation of mindfulness and conscious breathing, I promote a simple, yet potent perspective of Yoga that is accessible for beginners and inspirational for experienced practitioners. My primary message as teacher is that Yoga is most powerful when we take the fundamental concepts off of the mat and apply them to our everyday experiences.
It is my passionate objective to not only help you find comfort, strength, and resilience in the challenging conditions of life, but also to encourage a communion with your wise inner self, awaken a recognition of your profound potential, and inspire a journey of spiritual evolution.
I had a fascination with the ocean from an early age, but growing up in the landlocked Midwest USA, my interest had no outlet, until adulthood when I began to travel the world. My Scuba Journey started with a magical encounter with a friendly dolphin named Dusty while living on the west coast of Ireland in 2007. She joined me and my instructor daily while I learned the ropes and gained my entry level PADI Open Water certification. The experience gave me a high I had never experienced. My life was changed forever.
Over the next several years I gradually expanded my certifications and experience in places like the United Kingdom, Spain, Mexico, Australia, Thailand, and Malaysia before making the decision to go pro at Barefoot Scuba in the Andaman Islands, India. After a 3 month internship I was invited back the following season to work as a dive guide and train to be a PADI instructor. This experience led me to further opportunities teaching scuba in the USA, Caribbean islands, and Central America.
Despite being an alluring and exciting adventure, Scuba Diving can feel awkward, uncomfortable, and scary in the beginning, especially to someone with a history of anxiety. When I experienced this discomfort, sometimes close to the verge of panic, I found myself instinctively reverting to the relaxation, breathing, and meditation techniques I had learned from Yoga, which not only helped me find my composure and comfort, but ultimately enhanced my skills as a diver.
Naturally, when I became a dive professional I found myself sharing these same techniques with my divers. Gradually, this integration of Yoga into Scuba Diving became more systematic and in 2015 I authored the Yoga Diver course, which was endorsed by PADI as a Distinctive Specialty certification.
In addition to teaching the PADI Yoga Diver Course for certified divers and a Yoga-Scuba experience for beginners, I specialize in working with divers who are challenged by anxiety, phobias, or past traumas and promoting Scuba Diving as a therapeutic, transformative experience for the body, mind, and soul.
